The letter

This week an article exposed a comfortable illusion: we have absorbed from science fiction the idea that an AI will say no when given an inappropriate order, yet the systems we actually use have no robust mechanism for doing so. The problem isn't technical, it's cognitive, because we assume a conscience where there is mostly obedience and we delegate accordingly. Meanwhile that delegation is accelerating on every front: Asana reports cutting model costs 76x in its browser agent tests with GPT-6.1 Sol, Sophos says OpenAI's Daybreak has reduced its threat investigation time by 96%, and Microsoft has published a playbook for autonomous agents in development. Each of these advances makes handing over the controls cheaper, faster and more tempting. That is how the lily pad works: it never seems to cover the pond until it already has. This is exactly what I discuss in chapter 15, where trust stops being a feeling and becomes a design decision, and keeping a human in the loop is not nostalgia but responsibility. The machine will not refuse on our behalf. That part is still our job.
