The shift from conversational AI to autonomous agents is not a feature update — it is the kind of discontinuity that our linear minds systematically fail to anticipate. This week, the data center industry made that discontinuity visible in concrete steel and copper: the infrastructure buildout required to sustain agentic AI is expanding at a pace that has no precedent in previous technology cycles, and this is exactly the dynamic I describe in Chapter 3, where the three forces of change — capability, cost, and adoption — do not add but multiply. An agent that can plan, execute, and iterate across dozens of tasks in parallel does not consume twice the compute of a chatbot; it consumes orders of magnitude more, and the energy and capital investment now flowing into that infrastructure is the market's way of pricing in an exponential curve that most strategic plans still treat as a straight line. Meanwhile, Perplexity has already moved beyond the theoretical, deploying GPT-6 Astra as an autonomous agent in production systems — the chessboard is filling faster than the observers watching it. What makes this week's signal particularly sharp is that the same agentic capability is simultaneously pressing against the limits of trust: safety-critical applications are forcing researchers to develop new algorithmic constraints, autonomous vehicles are still wrestling with the last mile of reliable judgment, and the question I raise in Chapter 15 becomes more urgent with every deployment cycle — not whether the technology works, but whether we have built the institutional and cognitive frameworks to govern something that is already outpacing our governance instincts. The problem, as always, is not technical. It is cognitive.
