The letter

Researchers published this week a formal economic model that predicts, with mathematical precision, when AI will replace workers inside organizations — and the conclusion is not that substitution is gradual, gentle, or negotiable, but that it can be abrupt, driven by a structural asymmetry that has been hiding in plain sight: training a human being takes years and costs a fortune, while scaling an AI system takes weeks and costs a fraction of that. This is exactly what I explore in Chapter 7, where I argue that automation does not creep in — it tips, the way the lily pad doubles overnight and suddenly covers the entire pond. The same week the model was published, Monday.com and twenty other technology companies announced layoffs citing AI as a contributing factor, which means the theory and the practice arrived in the same news cycle, something that should give us pause. Meanwhile, AI is now being applied to automate nuclear plant operations and to compress years of drug development into months — domains we long considered too complex, too regulated, too human to be touched. The problem is not technical. It is cognitive: our linear minds keep expecting a slow slope when the curve has already bent sharply upward, and by the time the transition feels real, we are already on the other side of it — which is precisely the adaptation crisis I describe in Chapter 12.
